Dodgers walk it off against the Phillies

What an exciting game at Ebbets Field today, as the Dodgers walked it off against the Phillies in stormy playing conditions.  With dark, stormy clouds looming, the Dodgers tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the 8th; they won it in the 10th after loading the bases with 0 outs.  Al Lopez hit a walk-off grand slam to clinch the 5-1 victory.  Van Mungo got the start for Brooklyn and he pitched very well, going 9 innings and allowing just 1 earned run.  But it was Dazzy Vance who gets the win in relief, pitching a scoreless 10th frame.  Syl Johnson got the start for the Phillies.  He has been pitching well all season and it was no different in this game.  Johnson retired 10 Brooklyn batters on strikeouts.

There was no scoring in this tight game until the 6th inning.  Phillies shortstop Chile Gomez executed a successful squeeze play to score George Watkins.  The Dodgers responded in the 8th.  Joe Stripp singled, then Sam Leslie doubled.  Tony Cuccinello then walked to load the bases with 0 outs.  Lonny Frey walked to score a run and tie the game.  But Brooklyn's next 3 batters could not reach and they Dodgers settled for just 1 run in an inning that held promise.  In the 10th, Dolph Camilli reached on a 2-base error from Joe Stripp after 2 were out.  Camilli did not score.  But in the 10th, Sam Leslie and Tony Cucinello singled to start the inning.  Pretzels Puzzullo was called on in relief.  Lonny Frey singled to load the bases, then Al Lopez crushed a fastball to deep left-center, winning the game.

The crowd enjoyed this great game.  Let's hope they got home okay without being rained on.

Cardinals sweep Dodgers at Sportsman's Park

The tough luck losses continue to pile up for the Dodgers, as they were swept in this weekend's series in St. Louis.  The Dodgers lost the finale 14-8.  Poor pitching had once again plagued the Dodgers.  Starter Ray Benge couldn't make it out of the 3rd inning, and the bullpen allowed 7 runs.  The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead.  Catcher Bill Delancey hit 2 home runs for St. Louis, and Joe Medwick (who was 5-for-12 in the series) finished 2-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.

The Dodgers have now lost 6 straight and hold a 2-15 record over their last 17 games.

The Cardinals scored 4 runs in the 1st inning.  Bill Delancey hit a 3-run shot.  The Cardinals then scored runs in each of the following 4 innings.  Joe Medwick hit an RBI double in the 2nd, Frankie Frisch hit a 2-run single in the 3rd.  In the 4th, Bill Delancey hit his 2nd home run.  In the 5th, Terry Moore hit a leadoff triple and would score.  Then, after 2 outs were recorded, Frankie Frisch hit a 2-run home run.

The Cardinals beat up Les Munns in the 8th.  They scored 4 runs on 4 hits to go up 14-1.  Surprisingly, the Dodgers would plate 7 runs in the bottom of the 9th on 6 hits, 2 walks, and a couple of Cardinals errors.

But this was an ugly loss!  On to the next series.

Medwick, Cardinals hand Dodgers 4th straight loss

It's been a common theme for the Dodgers recently - going ahead with a lead only to give it back.  That happened today at Sportsman's Park as the Cardinals defeated Brooklyn, 5-4, in a walk off win.  Dodger pitching had struggled in the recent series against Cubs; pitching wasn't horrible in this game, but a late inning error led to an unearned run.  Joe Medwick hit his 8th home run of the season.

The Dodgers scored all 4 of their runs in the 1st inning.  Four singles and a couple of errors put Brooklyn in the lead.  But the Cardinals would chip away at that lead.  In the bottom of the 5th, Joe Medwick hit his home run - a two run shot.  And in the bottom of the 9th, Burgess Whitehead hit a slow roller to short, Lonny Frey fielded the ball and threw it away for a 2-base error.  After 2 were out, Joe Medwick singled the winning run home.

Manager Mathew Williams was apoplectic after the game.

"I'm not answering any questions.  I'm getting a little sick and tired of the poor play - particularly on the pitching side but also with errors in the field.  I'm frustrated."

Brooklyn pitching ranks 7th in the league with a 5.21 ERA.  Bullpen ERA also ranks 2nd to last.  If the Dodgers don't want to have a long summer, they'd better wake up.

Dodgers win in opener against Reds

The Dodgers welcomed the Cincinnati Reds to town last night, beating them, 11-8.  Len Koenecke hit a tie-breaking, 3-run home run in the bottom of the 8th to give the Dodgers the commanding lead and eventually the win.  Al Hollingsworth got the start for Cincinnati, and he was knocked around for 7 runs over 5.2 innings.  His poor pitching allowed Brooklyn to gain a sizable lead.  But the Reds scored 5 runs in the 7th to tie the game.

This was a high-scoring game.  The Dodgers got out to an early lead in the 1st as Sam Leslie singled home Lonny Frey.  The Reds would score 1 run in both the 2nd and 3rd innings.  In the bottom of the 3rd, the Dodgers took a 4-2 lead.  Tony Cuccinello led off with a single, then Sam Leslie walked.  After a strikeout, Jim Bucher hit a big 2-run triple (Bucher was injured in the game and will miss about a week).

The Dodgers scored 3 in the 6th inning.  Van Mungo singled and reached 2nd on an error.  Lonny Frey singled.  Then after back-to-back ground outs from Stripp and Cuccinello, Sam Leslie was intentionally walked.  Then Len Koenecke doubled in the 2 runners.  Things were looking good at this point for Brooklyn, but Cincinnati would strike back with a 5-run 7th inning to tie the game.  Gilly Campbell singled, then stole 2nd.  Lew Riggs walked.  Billy Myers lined out, then Ival Goodman walked.  With bases loaded, one out, Sammy Byrd singled to score 2.  Then, after a fly out, Alex Kampouris hit a crucial, 3-run home run to tie the game.

But fear not, the Dodgers would score 4 runs in the 8th inning and pull ahead.  Lonny Frey started off the inning with a ground out, then Joe Stripp reached on an error.  After a fly out, Sam Leslie singled to put runners on the corners.  Len Koenecke then stepped to the plate and launched a massive, 3-run home run.  The Dodgers would add another run in the inning.

The Reds would score 1 in the 9th, but it wasn't enough.  Good work by the Dodgers to take care of the lowly Reds.
