Game 4 of the World Series goes to the Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are now just 1 win away from a World Series championship, as they defeated the Pirates in Game 4, 4-3 in extra innings.  It was an exciting game at Forbes Field today; fans were cheering wildly, hoping for a win for their Pirates.  This game featured high drama.  In the end, Detroit scored a run in the 10th on an error and won it.

The game featured some scoring early.  In the 1st inning, the Tigers got off to a 1-0 lead.  Pete Fox led off the game with a single.  After an out was recorded, Goose Goslin hit a single, scoring a run.  But the Pirates would respond with 2 in the bottom of the 1st.  Lloyd Waner singled, then Paul Waner singled, then Arky Vaughan singled to score a run.  Gus Suhr then doubled to score another.  With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Pie Traynor then grounded out, then Tom Padden walked.  With bases loaded, Woody Jensen hit into a force play which resulted in a runner being thrown out at home.  Tommy Thevenow then hit into a force to end the inning.

In the 2nd inning, the Tigers would tie it.  Bill Rogell flied out, but Hank Greenberg doubled, then Marv Owen singled him home.  Then pitcher Carl Fischger doubled; on the play Hank Greenberg was thrown out at the plate in an attempt to score.  Despite another walk, Detroit could not score.  At this point it was 2-2.

In the 3rd inning, the Tigers would pull ahead.  Goose Goslin singled and got to 2nd on a wild pitch.  After an out was recorded, Charlie Gehringer hit a big single to score a run.  Bill Rogell would single next to put runners on the corners, but the Tigers could not score additional runs.  The Pirates went down in order in the 4th.  In the 5th, 6th, and 7th, they produced a runner each inning but couldn't get the big hit to score one.

Things quieted down in innings 4-8, which featured no scoring.  In the bottom of the 9th inning, with the Pirates down 3-2, Tommy Thevenow grounded out to start the inning.  Wally Roettger then grabbed a bat to pinch hit for pitcher Ralph Birkofer.  He doubled.  Lloyd Waner then grounded out to put a runner on 3rd.  With 2 outs, a runner on third, and hot hitting Paul Waner at the plate, Tigers pitcher Carl Fischer threw a wild pitch allowing Roettger to score.  The fans couldn't believe it -- the Pirates came back in the 9th!

But the party would not last long, as the Tigers would score the winning run in the 10th.  Charlie Gehringer singled to start out the inning.  Bill Rogell flied out.  Hank Greenberg struck out.  Marv Owen then hit a bounding ball to second base.  Tommy Thevenow ranged to his left, made an acrobatic play but threw the ball wild to first base, allowing Gehringer to score!  Gee Walker flied out to end the inning, but the damage was done.  The Tigers now led 4-3.  In the bottom of the 10th, Schoolboy Rowe relieved Fischer.  His first batter was Arky Vaughan who doubled.  Chief Hogsett was then called on in relief.  Gus Suhr struck out, then Pie Traynor flied out.  With 2 outs and the tying runner on second, backup catcher Pat Veltman grounded out.  The Tigers won the game!

We now prepare for Game 5 in Pittsburgh.  If the Tigers win, this World Series is over.  Tune in folks!

Tigers take Game 3 of the World Series

The Detroit Tigers took a 2-1 series lead after winning today at Forbes Field, 7-2.  Elden Auker pitched marvelously for Detroit; he went the full 9 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs (2 earned).  He outpitched Pittsburgh starter Bill Swift; Swift was hit hard - 13 hits and 7 runs (5 earned) over 8 innings.  The Detroit offense was humming yet again.  The Tigers pounded out 13 hits and capitalized with runners in scoring postion: 6-for-12 as a team.  The Tigers offense was simply too much to handle, and it looks like Pittsburgh is going to have wake up quickly if they want a chance in this series.  Detroit has been the better team thus far.

The Pirates started off the scoring in this game.  In the 2nd inning, Gus Suhr walked, then Earl Grace singled.  With runners on the corners, Pie Traynor grounded into a double play which produced a run.  But the Tigers would score 2 in the 3rd inning and never look back.  Elden Auker led off the inning with a single, then Pete Fox grounded out.  Mickey Cochrane singled to put runners at the corners.  Goose Goslin then hit a sacrifice fly.  Then, Charlie Gehringer singled, then Rogell singled to produce a run.  Hank Greenberg then flied out to end the inning.

The 5th inning was big one for the Tigers.  Mickey Cochrane grounded out to start things off, then Goose Goslin reached on an error.  Charlie Gehringer walked, then Billy Rogell singled to load the bases.  Hank Greenberg then produced a bases clearing triple to make it 5-1 Detroit.  The Tigers hot offense would add 2 more in the 6th.  Marv Owen led things off with a double, then Elden Auker singled.  Pete Fox grounded out to the drawn-in infield, then Cochrane walked to loaded the bases.  Goslin then reached on an error which produced a run.  After a foul out, Billy Rogell hit a single, but Gehringer was tagged out on an odd play, ending the inning.

The Pirates offense was mostly quiet in the late innings.  They went down in order in the 6th and the 7th.  In the 8th inning, they'd score their final run.  Wally Roettger pinch hit for Bill Swift and he singled.  Lloyd Waner then hit into a force out.  Paul Waner popped out.  Arky Vaughan was then hit by a pitch to put runners at 1st and 2nd.  Gus Suhr then singled in a run to make it 7-2.  Earl Grace lined out to end the inning.

The Pirates went down in order in the 9th.

The Pirates need a strong game at home for Game 4.  Catch the results here!
