Brooklyn opened up the scoring in the 1st inning. Buzz Boyle led off the game with a single, then after 2 fly outs, Sam Leslie doubled him home to score the run. But the Cubs would take the lead in the 2nd. Gabby Hartnett singled to lead off the inning, but Chuck Klein then popped out, and Ki-Ki Cuyler flied out. But the young 18-year-old, Phil Cavarretta singled to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Then, Billy Jurges hit a big double to center field to score both runs. Charlie Root added an RBI single to make it 3-1 Cubs.
The Dodgers made it 3-2 after scoring a run in the 3rd. After 2 were out, Lonny Frey tripled, then Danny Taylor singled him home.
Things then fell relatively silent until the 6th inning. In the bottom of the 6th, Ki-Ki Cuyler doubled after 1 was out. Phil Cavarretta then hit a single to center; Danny Taylor fielded the ball and fired home to try to get Cuyler at the plate. He succeeded as Cuyler was thrown out against all odds. Then, Billy Jurges was intentionally walked. Charlie Root then hit a single to center; Taylor again fielded the ball and once and again fired home, nailing Cavarretta at the plate! That's right, that's 2 outfield assists in 1 inning.
The Dodgers tied the game in the 8th. Buzz Boyle singled, then, after a fly out, Danny Taylor was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Then, Sam Leslie hit a sacrifice fly. In the 9th, Jim Bucher hit a lead off home run to make it 4-3. In the bottom of the 9th, the Cubs went down 1-2-3. Credit some timely hitting and great defense for the Brooklyn win!
