Reds nip Dodgers, 5-3

The Dodgers gave up runs late and ended up losing to the Reds today, 5-3, at Crosley Field.  Van Mungo gets the loss, he is now 15-13, and he struggled a bit, giving up 12 hits and 5 earned runs in 8 innings.  The Reds scored 1 run in the 7th inning and 3 in the 8th inning to come from behind to get the win.  Ray Kolp gets the win in relief for the Reds.

Let's look at the late scoring by Cincinnati.  In the 7th inning, Chick Hafey doubled to lead things off.  Adam Comorosky popped out.  Linc Blakely then singled to put runners at the corners.  Pinch hitter Harlin Pool hit a sacrifice fly to score the run.  Tony Freitas then flied out.  But it was the 8th inning when things really got cookin'.  Tony Piet doubled to lead off the inning, then Gordon Slade popped out.  Mark Koenig walked.  Jim Bottomley struck out.  Then Chick Hafey hit a double to score one, and Adam Comorosky singled to score 2.  Chick Hafey had a nice game for Cincinnati, going 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored.

With the loss, the Dodgers are now 9-5 for the month of August.  The Pittsburgh Pirates are now 10.5 games up for the division.
