Pirates show Dodgers why they're in 1st place

The Pirates made quick work of the Dodgers today, beating them 12-0 at a sun-splashed Forbes Field.  Waite Hoyt went the distance for Pittsburgh, notching the shutout, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks to go with 7 strikeouts.  The Pirates scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning and never looked back.  Johnny Babich got smoked; he allowed 8 earned runs and 9 hits in 6.1 innings.  Harry Smythe and Ownie Carroll gave up runs in relief.

Arky Vaughan was among the 7 starters for Pittsburgh with 2+ hits in the game.  He hit into force out in the 1st inning, popped out in the 3rd, but singled in the 6th, hit a 2-RBI double in the 7th, and walked in the 8th.

Today's game marks the 10th time the Dodgers have been shutout this season.  Despite today's loss, Brooklyn is hitting .301 in the month of August and has a 9-7 record.
