Dodgers win an exciting one over the Giants

Lonny Frey, who finished 3-for-6, hit a towering home run to right field in the 11th inning to seal the win for Brooklyn, 7-6.  It really was an exciting game at Ebbets Field today between two bitter rivals, but when the dust cleared it was Brooklyn who prevailed.  Van Mungo gave up an unearned run in the 9th to force extras, but he mostly outpitched his counterpart Carl Hubbell in this one.  The Giants scored 2 in the 10th, but the Dodgers surprisingly matched that in their half of the inning and then went on to the suspenseful victory.

The Giants got out to the lead in this one in the 1st inning.  With 2 out, Mel Ott clubbed a massive home run with a runner on.  But the Dodgers would respond in the 2nd.  Buzz Boyle hit a 2-out double to score a run, then Al Lopez singled another runner home.  The Giants would score in the 3rd, but the Dodgers went back into the lead in the 5th, scoring 2 runs.  Al Lopez walked, then Van Mungo singled.  After an out, Lonny Frey singled a man home.  Then, Danny Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to score another.  The Giants tied the game in the 9th.  After 2 outs were recorded, George Grantham reached base on a crucial Tony Cuccinello error.  Then Jo-Jo Moore doubled him home.

An astonishing turn of events would happen in the 10th.  Reliever Harry Smythe got Bill Terry to ground out, then Mel Ott doubled.  Travis Jackson then hit a big 2-run home run.  Things were looking good for the Giants, but the Dodgers would score 2 of their own.  Len Koenecke singled, but was erased on a force play.  Danny Taylor singled to put runners at the scorners.  Tony Cuccinello hit into a force out, but a run scored.  Sam Leslie then singled the runner to 3rd, and then Joe Stripp, with 2 outs, hit a big base hit to center to make it 6-6.

In the 11th, the Giants got a hit but nothing more.  With 2 outs in the 11th, Lonny Frey hit a big home run to win the game.  The crowd went wild!  Great win for Brooklyn.
