Dizzy Dean pitches a gem to beat Brooklyn

Dizzy Dean picked up his 17th win of the season today in a fine performance against Brooklyn which saw the Cardinals win, 2-1.  Dean allowed just 4 hits and 1 earned run over 9 innings.  This was a close game throughout; Ray Benge pitched strongly for Brooklyn as well, but in the end the Cardinals managed to edge Brooklyn by the slimmest of margins.

The Cardinals took the lead in the 2nd inning, plating 1 run.  Rip Collins walked to lead off the inning, then, after an out was recorded, Leo Durocher hit a single to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  Ernie Orsatti then singled to score a run.  The Cardinals added to their lead in the 3rd after Rip Collins hit a big, 2-out triple to make it 2-0.  Brooklyn scored their only run in the 4th.  Lonny Frey led off with a double, then, after an out was recorded, Sam Leslie singled him home.

The Dodgers only had 5 at-bats with runners in scoring position.  Dizzy Dean was simply too good today.  "I gotta hand it to him," Manager Williams said.  "I love watching him pitch and he proved why he's one of the best in the game today.
