Dodgers top Pirates, 5-4

In a one-run game, the Dodgers came out on top over Pittsburgh today, 5-4.  A big crowd was on hand on a beautiful summer day to see their Dodgers continue their winning ways.  Tom Zachary picks up the win for the Dodgers; he nearly went the distance, leaving the game with the bases loaded in the 9th.  Ownie Carroll was able to come on and finish the game for the Dodgers and notch the save.  The hitting star for Brooklyn was backup catcher Ray Berres, who was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Pirates got out to an early lead, plating 3 runs in the 1st inning.  Lloyd Waner led off the game with a single, then Wally Jensen hit a single + error to score a run.  Fred Lindstrom then singled another run home.  After a sacrifice bunt from Arky Vaughan, Gus Suhr hit an RBI double.  But the Dodgers would answer right away with 2 runs in their first, followed by additional runs in the 2nd and 3rd.

The Pirates put up a hell of a fight in the 9th, but they couldn't get the 2 runs they needed.  They scored 1 but it was not enough.

The Dodgers are now just 2 games under .500 at 44-46 and they've scored exactly the same amount of runs that they've allowed.
