Dodgers take first 2 from Reds

In front of a packed house at Ebbets Field today, the Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds, 7-3.  Ray Benge pitched marvelously, going 8 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs on 8 hits, 3 walks, 0 strikeouts.  Joe Stripp finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Al Lopez was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's.  Ray Benge helped out his own cause with a couple of RBI's at the plate.

The Reds opened the scoring in the game in the 1st inning when Gordon Slade tripled with one out, and then, after an out was recorded, doubled home by Jim Bottomley.  The Dodgers tied the game in the 3rd. Joe Stripp singled to lead off the inning, then Al Lopez doubled.  After an out was recorded, Buzz Boyle hit an RBI ground out to second.  The Reds took the lead in the 4th.  Mark Koening walked, then Jim Bottomley singled.  Chick Hafey grounded into a double play and a run came in.  After a single from Harlin Pool, Ernie Lombardi walked, but Alex Comorosky couldn't get the big hit and left them stranded.  The Dodgers would plate 3 crucial runs in the 4th.  Len Koenecke doubled, then Danny Taylor walked.  After a force out, Tony Cuccinello hit an RBI single, then Joe Stripp singled to load the bases.  Al Lopez got a bases loaded free pass, then Ray Benge hit a sacrifice fly.  The Dodgers would not relinquish the lead after that.

The Reds had 2 runners thrown out at the plate in the 8th inning.  Mark Koening hit a double and baserunner Gordon Slade, who had been on first, tried to score but was thrown out.  Just one play later, Jim Bottomley singled and Koening was thrown out at the plate.
