Dodgers survive wild 9th inning, win 8-7

The Dodgers went into the bottom of the 9th leading 8-3; in the end it, was an 8-7 win for Brooklyn.  Starter Ray Benge was pulled after 8 very solid innings.  But with a pitch count of 133 pitches, Brooklyn Manager Mathew Williams called on the bullpen.  The bullpen, of course, has been a sore spot for this club throughout the season, and they almost gave one away, but Dutch Leonard was able to preserve the win after stranding the tying run on 3rd.

In the bottom of the 9th, Ownie Carroll came on to close things out.  He allowed a leadoff walk to Dick Gyselman, then Marty McManus doubled.  Bill Urbanski walked to load the bases.  Les Mallon then hit a double scoring 2.  Shanty Hogan then singled, plating 1.  Brooklyn Manager Williams then decided to bring out Dutch Leonard on short rest.  But Buck Jordan singled off of him to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  Red Worthington then hit into a force out to put runners on 1st and 3rd.  With 2 outs and the game on the line, Braves Manager Bill McKechnie opted to go with Hal Lee to pinch hit.  He softly grounded out to 3rd, ending the game.

Len Koenecke had a big game for Brooklyn, finishing 3-for-5 with a home run.  Johnny Frederick also had 3 hits.  Al Lopez, back from the disabled list, went 4-for-5 with 2 runs scored.
