Cubs' Warneke shuts out Dodgers

Dodgers hitting has been a bit suspect in recent games, and the trend continued today as they were shutout by the Cubs' Lon Warneke.   Warneke was very effective, scattering 5 hits over 9 innings.  He did not allow a run, walked 2, and struck out 3.  The game was 1-0 Cubs until the 9th inning when the Cubs scored 5, which included a Gabby Hartnett 3-run shot.  Watty Clark got the start for Brooklyn and although he pitched well, he was pulled early because he was getting fatigued.  Manager Williams was hoping for a good bullpen day like yesterday, but it wasn't to be.  Boom-Boom Beck allowed 4 earned runs in the 9th.

The game was tied at 0-0 until the 3rd inning when the Cubs scored 1.  Lon Warneke and Billy Herman singled to start the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gabby Hartnett.  The Dodgers managed just 5 hits in the game, including 2 doubles.  They couldn't get a necessary hit in a number of circumstances.

"We tip our cap to Lon Warneke," Manager Williams said.  "He shut us down fair and square.  Any time Len Koenecke gets an 0-for, you know the pitcher was good."

Today's game marks the 7th time the Dodgers have been shut out this season.
