Hot hittin' Hack Wilson hit another home run today, his 5th, of grand slam variety and the Dodgers beat the Reds, 4-3. Wilson hit the home run in the 1st inning. The Dodgers would not score again. A single from Boyle started the inning, then Frey doubled, and Danny Taylor walked. With bases loaded, no out, Reds starter Si Johnson had to give him something to hit, and Hack did not miss it. The deep blast to the left centerfield seats put the Dodgers in a sizable lead early.
Tom Zachary got the win for the Dodgers. He went 8 innings, and was pushed into the 9th, but was too tired to finish. He ended up going 8 innings, allowing 8 hits, 3 runs (3 earned), 3 walks, 2 strikeouts. He got into some trouble in the 9th. Let's take a look at what happened:
Ernie Lombardi singled to start the inning. Then Ivy Shiver singled, then Sparky Adams singled. It was bases loaded, nobody out, Reds down 4-2. Ownie Carroll then came in to relieve Zachary. Bob O'Farrell, the pinch hitter, fouled out, then Carroll threw a wild pitch, plating 1. Harlin Pool was intentionally walked. Gordon Slade hit into force out that resulted in the runner and 3rd being thrown out at the plate. A weak ground out ended the game.
