Cincinnati evens the series with 4-run 8th inning

On a glorious Sunday afternoon at Ebbets Field, the Cincinnati Reds defeated our Brooklyn boys, 6-3.  A big 4-run 8th inning broke a 2-2 tie, and the Reds would win to even the series.  Van Mungo pitched 8 innings but allowed 6 earned runs.  With recent struggles, Mungo's ERA has ballooned up to 3.24.

Here's how the Reds scored the winning runs in the 8th.  Tony Piet popped out to start the inning.  Then, Gordon Slade singled, then Mark Koening singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  Jim Bottomley flied out for the 2nd out.  Chick Hafey walked to load the bases.  Ernie Lombardi then hit a pop fly to left and dropped in front of Glenn Chapman; Chapman then threw the ball away for an error.  Three runs scored on the play.  An Art Ruble double would plate the last run for Cincinnati.

Benny Frey picked up his first win of the season for the Reds.  He had been 0-9 in 9 starts.
