A critical play happened in the top of the 5th that nearly had Dodgers' manager Mathew Williams ejected from the game. Jimmy Jordan started the inning when he reached on the error by left fielder Harlin Pool. Ray Berres flied out, then pitcher Tom Zachary hit a single. Len Koenecke reached on an error by shortstop Gordon Slade, scoring Jordan. Lonny Frey then singled, loading the bases with 1 out. At this point in the game it was 3-2 Reds, but the Dodgers situation here was looking pretty good. Danny Taylor hit a fly ball to center fielder Chick Hafey who made a 'web gem' catch; Hafey caught it and threw home. The umpire called the runner safe, but after conferring with fellow umpires, the runner was ruled out, ending the inning and ruining the Dodgers chances of coming back (on the play, I rolled "RP" - rare play and was ruled out on a controversial call).
"That call was terrible," Manager Williams said. "He was safe. It really ruined our chances at coming back; I was very disappointed in the call. We would have scored a run there and still had 2 on base who could've scored. We can't lose games on technicalities. I called the umpire every name in the book."
The Dodgers lost this series to the Reds.
