The Dodgers bullpen let them down again in today's loss to the Reds, blowing a 5-1 lead before losing, 11-9. The Dodgers bullpen has logged 24.1 innings this year and has a 8.14 ERA. The Giants, by comparison have a 3.12 bullpen ERA. The weak spot, statistically, for the Dodgers is definitely their bullpen, and they will not have a chance at the pennant if the bullpen is not competitive with other teams. There have been 2 games already this season (at least) that have had leads blown late by the bullpen. That will not fly long-term; the pennant will likely be won by less than 5 games. Every game is important.
Today the goat was Ray Lucas who came into the game in the 7th and ended up going 1.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, 6 runs (6 earned), 1 walk, 1 strikeout, and 1 home run allowed (to Jim Bottomley). The first 6 batters in a row reached for Cincinnati in the 7th. In the 8th, Bottomley hit a two run home run, putting the Reds in a healthy lead. There was another mistake. With two outs in the 6th, Reds' catcher Ernie Lombardi reached base on an error, extending the inning for Ivy Shiver to hit a big home run.
"We can't give games away, we can't afford it," Manager Williams said after the game.
