Pirates score 6 in the 9th inning, win series

The Dodgers were up by 3 runs and had a 97% of chance of winning this game as they entered the 9th inning only to give it away to the Pirates, 6-3.  Brooklyn starter Van Mungo was pitching very effectively up until the 9th inning; he allowed just 1 hit entering the 9th and seemed to be in command.  But Paul Waner walked to start the inning, then Fred Lindstrom doubled.  Gus Suhr then grounded out, scoring a run.  Pie Traynor would then single, making it 3-2.  Tom Padden singled to put runners at 1st and 2nd.  Then Woody Jensen doubled, tying the game and putting runners at 2nd and 3rd.  Tommy Thevenow followed with a big single to make it 5-3.  They'd add another run in the inning before it was over.

What started out as a fine performance by Mungo ended with a mediocre line: 8.1 inning pitched, 6 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 4 walks, 3 strikeouts.  He simply fell apart in the 9th when he allowed 6 base runners.  Charlie Perkins would finish the game for Brooklyn after Mungo was pulled.  Manager Mathew Williams did not want to pull Mungo because the bullpen has pitched so poorly.

Either way its a tough-luck series loss.  "We've given a lot of games away so far this season," Manager Williams said.  "Our pitching has struggled and we've struggled."
