In a wild game that took 12 innings and featured 5 different lead changes, the Dodgers came out on top, beating Pittsburgh, 7-6. It really was quite a game today at Ebbets Field in front of a packed house. In the 12th, Lonny Frey began the inning with a single, then Len Koenecke walked, then Sam Leslie walked. With the bases loaded, pitcher Les Munns singled to center, scoring the winning run.
The Dodgers fell behind early in the game. The Pirates scored 4 runs in the third inning. They did it with 5 consecutive hits. But the Dodgers scored 4 runs of their own in the 6th, making the game a 5-5 tie. Here's how they did it: after a flyout, Lonny Frey walked. Then Len Koenecke doubled, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd. Then Sam Leslie grounded out and knocked in Frey. Jimmy Jordan singled, plating another, then Tony Cuccinello singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Al Lopez had the big at bat: he doubled in the 2 runners.
In the 7th the Dodgers pulled ahead. Joe Stripp singled, then Buzz Boyle was hit by a pitch (he is injured for 7 more games). After a strikeout from Frederick, Lonny Frey doubled in Joe Stripp. But the Pirates answered in the 8th. With 2 outs, the Waner brothers had consecutive hits, followed by a single from Fred Lindstrom, scoring 1. But they left the bases loaded to end the inning, losing out on a big scoring chance.
The top of the 12th looked promising for the Pirates; they had consecutive walks to start the inning. Then an error by pitcher Les Munns loaded the bases with 0 outs. It was looking very grim for the Dodgers. But Fred Lindstrom flied into a double play as the runner on 3rd was out at the plate. Glenn Chapman in left got the outfield assist. Arky Vaughan then flied out with runners on 1st and 2nd.
"It wasn't easy, but we got it. Ya' gotta relax sometimes or this game will eat you up," said Manager Williams
