The Pirates scored 9 runs late and outlasted the Dodgers in a hard fought contest, 13-7. First baseman Gus Suhr was a spark plug for Pittsburgh; he went 4-for-5, scoring 3 runs, and notching 6 RBI's. Ray Benge took the loss for the Dodgers and he was hit around a bit, allowing 7 earned runs in 7 innings. The game was tied until the 6th when the Dodgers took a 3-2 lead, but Pittsburgh would score 5 in the 7th inning and 4 in the 8th to take the game handily. Larry French gets the win for the Pirates.
Let's take a look at that big 7th inning for the Pirates. The inning began with singles from Lloyd Waner, Paul Waner, Arky Vaughan, and Gus Suhr. At that point, Pittsburgh had scored 2 runs. After a ground out, catcher Tom Padden singled and Dodgers' outfielder Danny Taylor threw the ball away for an error, allowing 2 more runs to score. A sacrifice fly accounted for the 5th and final run of the inning.
In the 8th inning, Pittsburgh reinforced their lead. Boom-Boom Beck was called out of the bullpen by the Dodgers and he struggled, walking the first 3 batters he faced. Gus Suhr then blasted a grand slam. The Dodgers were able to score a couple in the 9th, but it really didn't matter.
The rubber game of this series is next.
