Nightmare in Chicago: Dodgers swept in 4-game series

The Dodgers were swept at Wrigley Field today, losing the 4th and final game of the series to the Cubs, 8-3.  They have also lost 6 straight.  What began as a promising road trip has taken a turn for the worst, as the Dodgers seemingly cannot get the big hit or big relief appearance to secure a win.  The Dodgers bullpen ERA for the season is 9.17.  Even starting pitching has begun to struggle as Johnny Babich (who pitched today) has a 5.47 ERA; Dutch Leonard's ERA is 4.22.  Van Mungo and Ray Benge have pitched well and kept them afloat.

The Dodgers were tied for 1st place on May 3rd; they are now in 6th place and 5 games back of the Giants.  The Cubs, meanwhile, have won 7 straight and are just 1 game back.

The Cubs were 1st to score in this game when Babe Herman tripled in Chuck Klein who had doubled in the 3rd inning.  The Cubs nearly scored again that inning when Babe Herman attempted to score on a fly ball but was tagged out at the plate.  The Cubs would add 2 more in the 5th to make it 3-0 when Chuck Klein hit a 2-run home run.  The Dodgers would answer in the 6th.  Len Koenecke singled in Buzz Boyle who had doubled with 1 out.  But the Cubs bats were just too much to handle.  They scored 2 in the 6th and 3 in the 7th behind home runs from Gabby Hartnett and Babe Herman.

The Dodgers will travel next to St. Louis to complete the road trip.
