What a game today in front of 19,012 at Ebbets Field today as the New York Giants came from behind to beat the Dodgers in the 9th. It was a wild game with plenty of momentum changes and plenty of drama. Let's get into the action.
In the 3rd inning, the Giants scored 2. Jo-Jo Moore led off with a triple. Hugh Critz walked. A wild pitch scored a run, then Bill Terry grounded out. Mel Ott then singled, scoring the second run. But the Dodgers would score 4 in the 5th to make it a 4-2 Brooklyn lead. Tony Cuccinello singled, then Jimmy Jordan popped out. Giants starter Hi Bell then delivered a wild pitch, then walked Al Lopez. Then pitcher Les Munns walked to load the bases. Back-to-back singles from Boyle and Frey plated 3 runs. After a foul out, Sam Leslie would single in another run.
Johnny Vergez homered for the Giants in the 6th to make it 4-3. The Giants would tie it in the top of the 8th. Catcher Gus Mancuso hit a monster home run. But in the bottom of the 8th, the Dodgers would take the lead again. Tony Cuccinello hit a big home run.
But, incredibly, the Giants would pull ahead in the 9th with 2 runs. Jo-Jo Moore walked, then Critz sacrificed him to 2nd. Bill Terry fouled out. Mel Ott was issued an intentionally walk. Then Travis Jackson walked. Manager Mathew Williams called for the bullpen. Charlie Perkins replaced Les Munns. But Giants Manager Bill Terry pinch hit Hank Leiber for Lefty O'Doul. Leiber singled home 2 runs. The Dodgers went quietly in the 9th.
"I can't believe it," Manager Williams said. "I think Bill Terry out-smarted me with that pinch hit late. I wasn't expecting it. Oh well, we'll fight hard tomorrow."
