The trials continue for the Dodgers as they lose another close one late. The Giants scored an unearned run in the 9th to win the game 1-0. Giants' starter Fred Fitzsimmons went the distance, allowing just 3 hits in the shutout. This game was a fantastic pitcher's duel between Fitzsimmons and Van Mungo. It was Mungo who took the tough luck loss after the costly Brooklyn error.
The game entered the 9th tied 0-0. The Giants would score 1 in 9th. Jo-Jo Moore led off the inning and struck out. Hugh Critz grounded out. Bill Terry singled, then Mel Ott reached base on a costly error by Lonny Frey. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Travis Jackson singled home Terry for the winning run. The Dodgers would go quietly in the 9th.
Van Mungo pitched a great game, racking up 9 strikeouts. He allowed just 4 singles. He really deserved the win in this game. Jimmy Jordan had a pair of doubles for the Dodgers, besides that everyone else was pretty quiet.
"It's a tough luck season is what it is," Manager Mathew Williams said. "We've lost a lot of close ones late. But we're going to continue playing on with determination and see what June brings."
