Dodgers knock off Giants behind strong Benge start

Ray Benge went the distance, allowing just 4 hits and 1 earned run, as the Dodgers beat the Giants today, 4-1 in front of a packed house at Ebbets Field.  With the win, the Dodgers improve to 16-26.

The Giants threatened in the 8th inning down 3-1.  Phil Weintraub pinch hit and flied out.  Then, George Grantham pinch hit and walked.  Jo-Jo Moore grounded into a force play.  Lefty O'Doul pinch hit and singled, then Bill Terry walked.  It was bases loaded, 2 out, and Mel Ott up at the plate.  The Brooklyn fans were on the edge of their seat as Benge dealt to Mel Ott.  The result?  A Mel Ott strikeout.  Ray Benge, what a game!

The Dodgers would add a run in the 8th and the Giants would go quietly in their 9th.
