Dodgers win finale, earn series split

Len Koenecke went 5-for-5 with a home run and the Dodgers knocked off the Pirates, 8-3, to earn the series split against the league's first place team.  Koenecke singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, tripled in the 7th, and cracked a 2-run shot in the 9th inning.  Koenecke is one of the Dodgers' best hitters and it was nice to see him come through with a memorable game.  Buzz Boyle, Lonny Frey, Sam Leslie, and Jim Bucher all had 2-hit games for the Dodgers.  The Dodgers pounded out 15 hits in the game.

Dutch Leonard started for the Dodgers and earned the win.  He pitched well: 7.1 innings pitched, 9 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, and a strikeout.  He gave up 2 earned runs in the 8th; 3 hits in a row for Pittsburgh were responsible for the runs.

"We have one of the best offenses in the league, and it was on display today," Manager Williams said.  "I love seeing hard' drinkin' Len Koenecke have a big game."

Around the League
  • Boston just took 3 of 4 in their series with St. Louis.  Boston remains in 2nd place with a 35-21 record.  In the finale today, Dizzy Dean prevented the sweep with a big complete game start for the Cardinals.
  • The Phillies, who have struggled all season, took all 4 games in their series with the Cubs.  The Cubs were outscored 30-6 in the series.   The Phillies are currently on a 5-game winning streak.
  • The New York Giants took 3 of 4 from the Reds.  The Giants are now 5.5 back in the league.
  • Arky Vaughan continues to lead the batting race with a .440 average.  There is a chance he will finish the season with an average over .400.  He's been an excellent 1-2 punch with Paul Waner
