Dodgers throttle Dean, but Cardinals score big late

Despite a pedestrian performance by St. Louis starter Dizzy Dean, the Cardinals scored 3 in the 7th inning and 5 in the 9th inning to come from behind and beat the Dodgers today, 11-9.  It was a classic bullpen let down, and manager Mathew Williams may come under some scrutiny for pulling his starter Van Mungo after the 7th.  Dodgers pitchers yielded 6 walks in the inning, a completely unacceptable amount; at one point they walked 5 straight.  Let's get to the scoring.

The Cardinals scored 3 in the 1st inning, setting up starter Dizzy Dean nicely.  Three doubles and single were responsible for the scoring in that inning.  But the Dodgers would respond.  In the 3rd inning, Danny Taylor would double in Len Koenecke.  The Dodgers scored 2 more in the 5th: Danny Taylor hit a 2-run home run.  At this point it was tied but it wouldn't stay that way for long.  In the bottom of the 6th, Al Lopez grounded out, then Van Mungo reached on a 2-base error by center fielder Chick Fullis.  Then Frey, Koenecke, and Leslie singled, plating 2 runs.  After an out, Hack Wilson walked, loading the bases.  Joe Stripp then doubled in 2 runs (Hack Wilson was called out at the plate).  But the Cardinals would respond with 3 in the 7th inning.  Pepper Martin grounded out, then Joe Rothrock singled.  Frankie Frisch hit a ball to right that Hack Wilson couldn't reach; he doubled and got to 3rd on a Wilson throwing error.  After a strikeout, Ripper Collins singled, plating Frisch, and reached 2nd on an error by Sam Leslie.  A double from Bill Delancey made it 7-6, Brooklyn.

The key inning was the 9th.  Van Mungo had been pulled after he was pinch hit for in the bottom 7th.  Ownie Carroll pitched fine in the 8th, but was annihilated in the 9th.  He walked Rothrock to start the inning, then allowed singles from Frisch and Medwick to load the bases.  But the next 2 batters were retired without incident and things were looking good.  But Carroll walked the next 4 batters before being pulled for Ray Lucas.  Lucas walked in the final run of the inning.  Five runs scored total.  The Dodgers would make a little noise in the bottom of the 9th but couldn't come back.

"This is about as challenging of a season I've managed in the big leagues," Manager Mathew Williams said of his team's struggles
