A combination of subpar situational hitting and subpar pitching have plagued the Dodgers in the early go, as they drop a hapless game to the weak Phillies, 6-3. In today's game they left 14 runners on base, unable to get a key hit in a big moment. Joe Stripp left 2 runners in scoring position with 2 outs, Lonny Frey 3 runners, Len Koenecke 1, and Tony Cuccinello 3. They were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position overall.
The Phillies jumped in the lead in the third inning, scoring 3 runs. Dick Bartell began the attack with a single after one was out. Lou Chiozza then singled, followed by a 2-run triple from Ethan Allen. Allen was singled home by Don Hurst.
The Dodgers scored in the 4th and 6th innings to make it 3-2. In the 4th, Joe Stripp began the inning with a single. Koenecke then singled to put runners at the corners. Al Lopez hit into a force out, plating one run. Then in the 6th: Cuccinello doubled, then a single from Buzz Boyle brought him home.
The Phillies scored again in the 7th. It was Lou Chiozza at it again (he finished 4-for-5); he tripled home Jimmie Wilson. But the Dodgers made it 4-3 in the 8th. Johnny Frederick hit a towering solo home run. Unfortunately, the Phillies scored 2 runs (1 unearned from a Buzz Boyle error) in the 9th to win the game.
"We feel a little scattershot out the gate right now," Manager Williams said. "We're not hitting on all cylinders yet; we are too jumpy and not confident enough. Nothing to worry about, though, we will continue to play and hopefully find ourselves at .500 soon. That's my goal right now, right the ship and reach .500 and take it from there."
