Benge shines in sweep of Phillies

Dodgers starter Ray Benge didn't allow a base runner until the 6th inning and finished with a complete game win in the Dodgers big sweep of the Phillies.  Benge went 9 innings, allowing just 3 hits, 1 earned run, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts, and carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning.  He has been fantastic so far this season, compiling a tiny 0.43 ERA.  On the offensive side of the ball, Buzz Boyle hit a towering home run to right field - his first of the season.  Hot hitting Sam Leslie had a pair of RBI doubles.

The Dodgers scored in each of the first 5 innings.  They have had 10 hits or more in 8 of their past 9 games.  With this win they are now just 1 game back of the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL standings.

Around the League
  • The Boston Braves were swept this weekend by the Giants in Boston.  In today's game, Giants starter Hal Schumacher didn't allow a hit until the 9th inning.  He lost his no-hit bid when Tommy Thompson singled with 0 outs in the 9th.  New York leads the league with 13 home runs.
  • The St. Louis Cardinals took 2 of 3 against the Chicago Cubs this weekend at Wrigley Field.
  • Arky Vaughan is leading the batting race.  He is hitting a tremendous .511 in 45 at-bats.  Second in the race is Lou Chiozza at .438, and Paul Waner at third with .429.
  • Pittsburgh swept the Cincinnati Reds at Forbes Field this weekend.  Pittsburgh is the league's top hitting team with a combined .321 team average.
  • Mel Ott leads the league with 5 home runs.
On to The Polo Grounds...

With the series in Philadelphia in the rearview mirror, the Dodgers now travel to Manhattan to play a big series against their rivals the New York Giants at the ol' bathtub -- The Polo Grounds.  The Dodgers were 8-14 against the Giants last season, and need to play better baseball against these tough playin' boys from across the river.
