Dodgers escape 4-game sweep by Braves

It was an ugly series, but Brooklyn was able to come from behind and win the finale to avoid a 4-game sweep at the hands of the Braves.  To be swept at home by the Braves would have been an ugly distinction, but Dodger hitters showed up late and clubbed out 14 hits to get the big win.  Joe Stripp finished 3-for-4 with a home run to lead Brooklyn.  Tom Zachary got the complete game win despite not pitching exceptionally well.  Larry Benton gets the loss in relief, as he allowed a couple runs to score in the Dodgers 4-run 6th inning.  Brooklyn also jumped on the next reliever, Huck Betts, to the tune of 4 runs in 1 inning.

The Braves scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning to take an early lead.  Things were looking grim for Brooklyn, but they plated some big runs in the 6th and 8th innings.  In the 6th, Lonny Frey, who has been struggling recently, hit a big, 2-run double to lead the charge.  In the 8th inning, the Dodgers rapped out 5 hits and a walk in a 4-run inning.

Brooklyn was outscored in the series, 33-17.  They remain in last place.  They've lost 7 of their last 9, and 18 of their last 24.  They've struggled recently on both sides of the ball.  Their pitching staff holds a 5.05 ERA which is 2nd to last.

Brooklyn welcomes Philadelphia to town for the next series
