Dodgers come from behind, top Braves in extras

The Dodgers got a well-earned win today, beating the Braves 5-4 at Ebbets Field in 10 innings.  It was a thrill ride of a game that saw the Dodgers down early, only to come back in the 9th and win it in the 10th.  Here's how it went down.

Watty Clark was on the mound for Brooklyn, and he pitched well.  He allowed 7 hits and 2 earned runs over 8.2 innings.  In the 1st inning, Braves' big bat Wally Berger clubbed a solo shot.  But the Dodgers scored 2 in the 4th inning.  After an out was recorded, Danny Taylor walked.  He was erased on a force out but Jim Bucher singled, then Jimmy Jordan hit a big 2-out, 2-RBI double.  The Braves would tie it in the 8th.  Joe Mowry led off with a single, then Bill Urbanski laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Joe Coscarart then hit an infield single and the runner on 2nd scored after Jimmy Jordan threw a ball away for an error.

It was tied 2-2 going into the 9th.  In the 9th, after 2 outs were recorded, Shanty Hogan singled, then Pinky Whitney reached after catcher Whitey Ock muffed a throw to 1st.  Joe Mowry then singled to load the bases.  With 2 outs and the bases loaded, Bill Urbanski hit a big 2-run single.  But the Dodgers would score 2 in their half of the 9th.  Johnny Cooney pinch hit for Bill Reis and he doubled, then Whitey Ock walked.  After a Babe Phelps pinch-hit strikeout, Frenchy Bordagaray singled, scoring Cooney.  Ock tried to score on the play as well, but he was thrown out at the plate.  After a Lonny Frey fly out, Danny Taylor walked to load the bases.  Then, Sam Leslie singled to tie the game.

In the 10th inning, Babe Ruth pinch hit for the pitcher and nearly homered.  He hit a deep fly out to left.  Les Mallon then singled but was erased on a force play.  Randy Moore, who came into the game for an injured Wally Berger then grounded out.  In the bottom of the 10th, Jim Bucher singled, then Jimmy Jordan doubled.  Johnny Cooney popped out, then pinch hitter Johnny McCarthy hit a walk off single to center to win the game for Brooklyn.
