Tigers win Game 1 of the World Series

The Fall Classic is in full swing, and in Game 1 of this epic series it was the Detroit Tigers who pulled off the win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-2.  The crowd at Navin Field went wild as the Tigers got off to an early lead.  Schoolboy Rowe gets the win for Detroit, and he pitched very well.  Rowe went the distance, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs (2 earned).  But the Tigers' offensive power -- which led them to an American League Pennant -- got them the win today.  They out-hit the Pirates, 12-7.

Detroit scored in the opening inning.  Pete Fox led off the inning with a single, then Mickey Cochrane laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Fox to 2nd base.  Goose Goslin then doubled to deep right-center, scoring Fox.  Gehringer and Rogell were then retired.  In the 2nd inning, the Tigers were score 2.  Hank Greenberg led off the inning with a double, then Jo-Jo White singled to put runners at the corners.  Marv Owen then singled to plate a run.  Schoolboy Rowe then laid down a sacrifice to put runners on 2nd and 3rd.  Pete Fox then hit a sacrifice fly to plate the 2nd run.

Meanwhile, Schoolboy Rowe was shutting down the Pirates offense.  Paul Waner finished the game 0-for-2 and Arky Vaughan finished 0-for-4.  The Pirates went down in order in the 1st and 2nd innings.  They got a double from Earl Grace in the 3rd, but otherwise nothing.

There was no scoring again until the 6th inning when the Tigers plated another.  Charlie Gehringer led things off with a single, then Bill Rogell singled.  Rogell then stole 2nd to put runners at 2nd and 3rd, 0 outs.  Hank Greenberg grounded out to the drawn in infield.  Then Jo-Jo White walked to load the bases.  Marv Owen then hit a sacrifice fly.  Schoolboy Rowe then struck out.  At this point, it was 4-0 Tigers.

The Pirates scored their 2 runs in the 8th inning.  Earl Grace led off with a double, then Woody Jensen singled to put runners at the corners.  Lloyd Waner then singled to make it 4-1.  Paul Waner then hit a sacrifice fly.  Fred Lindstrom then fouled out and he was injured on the play as well.  He will miss the rest of this series.

The Tigers responded in the bottom of the 8th.  Greenberg grounded out, then Jo-Jo White singled and stole 2nd.  Marv Owen walked.  Schoolboy Rowe then singled to score a run.  Pete Fox then hit into a force play with runners at the corners to plate 1 run.  Fox stole 2nd, so the Pirates decided to intentionally walk Mickey Cochrane.  Goose Goslin then grounded out.

The Pirates went quietly in the top of the 9th.

It was a fine start to this year's World Series.  The Tigers offense was simply too much.  The crowd was into it all game -- the weather was good for October.
