Pirates even the World Series at a game a piece

The Pittsburgh Pirates responded in a big way to their Game 1 loss, winning Game 2, 6-2.  Larry French outdueled the Tigers' Tommy Bridges, going the distance and allowing just 2 earned runs against a very potent Detroit Tigers offense.  French also had 2 hits and an RBI to help the cause.  Let's take a look at how this one played out.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the very first inning, much to the chagrin of Pirates Manager Pie Traynor who was afraid Pittsburgh would be against the ropes early.  Pete Fox singled, then Gee Walker doubled him home.  Walker was then caught stealing, and the next 2 hitters produced easy outs.  The Tigers would score again in the 2nd.  Hank Greenberg hit a ball deep to the right centerfield gap for a triple.  Goose Goslin then hit an RBI groundout.

But the Pirates would put up a crooked number in the 3rd inning.  Tommy Thevenow got things started with a walk, then Earl Grace doubled to put runners at 2nd and 3rd, 0 outs.  Larry French then hit an RBI single, then Lloyd Waner hit into a force play that scored another.  After a groundout from Paul Waner, Arky Vaughan singled, then Gus Suhr hit a big RBI triple to make it 4-2 Pittsburgh.

In the 5th inning, the Pirates plated a run.  In the bottom half of the inning, the Tigers had a big scoring chance.  After a Marv Owen double and a Tommy Bridges strikeout, Pete Fox walked, then Gee Walker reached on an error.  With the bases loaded, Charlie Gehringer was at the plate.  He ended up grounding into a double play, leaving the bases loaded.

In the 6th inning, Woody Jensen tripled for Pittsburgh and, after an out was recorded, scored on a wild pitch.  There would be no more scoring in the game after the 6th.  The Tigers did not get a runner in scoring position in innings 6 through 9.

So, the Pirates come back with a key win in Game 2.  We will see you for Game 3 in Pittsburgh!
