The Pirates have taken the first 3 of this 4-game series, winning today 9-3. Fred Lindstrom finished 3-for-5 with a home run and 2 RBI's. He played well, and really, the whole Pirates lineup did as they pounded out 15 hits. Larry French gets the win for Pittsburgh; he went 8 innings, allowing 3 earned runs. With the loss, the Dodgers are now 73-73.
The Pirates scored 4 in the 6th inning to make it 7-2. Catcher Tom Padden led off with a walk and then swiped 2nd on a steal. Larry French then tried to lay down a sac bunt but the lead runner was thrown out. Lloyd Waner walked, then Woody Jensen singled to load the bases. Fred Lindstrom then hit into a force play as the runner on 3rd was thrown out at the plate. Would the Dodgers escape this big jam? No. Arky Vaughan hit a dribbler in front of the plate that Al Lopez threw away (a big 2-base error) and 3 runs scored. That put the game firmly in Pittsburgh's hand. At this point they had a 96% chance of winning the game (they'd had a 69% chance to win it going into the inning).
Danny Taylor finished 3-for-4 for the Dodgers with a run scored and an RBI. Charlie Perkins picks up the loss, though he didn't pitch poorly. He went 6.1 innings, allowing 9 hits, 6 runs (3 earned), 4 walks, 0 strikeouts.
