In the first of 2 games today at Baker Bowl in Philadelphia, it was the Phillies who prevailed, 7-3. Tom Zachary got kicked around pretty good in 6 innings, allowing 10 hits and 4 earned runs. He picks up the loss. Phil Collins pitched well for the Phillies and helped out his own cause with 2 base hits and an RBI.
The key inning was the 5th for the Phillies when they plated 3 runs. The first 4 batters all singled (Collins, Bartell, Haslin, and Allen). The third run of the inning was scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dolph Camilli.
The Dodgers had a scoring chance in the 7th. Johnny Frederick pinch hit and hit a ball to left field. Runner Al Lopez tagged up and tried to score but the play was overturned on appeal (Lopez left the base before the catch was made). The Dodgers would get 3 of their own in the 8th, including a 2-RBI double from Al Lopez but it was too little, too late.
