Dodgers win a laugher, 14-1

The Dodgers made mincemeat of the Phillies today, whooping them 14-1.  Brooklyn scored in the 1st inning, then 2 runs in the 3rd, 3 runs in the 4th, and 8 runs in the 8th.  They pounded out 11 hits, including a 3-for-4 performance from Danny Taylor, and a 2-for-5 performance from Tony Cuccinello, including a home run and 5 RBI's.  Really, the whole team hit well, as every starter except Al Lopez got a hit (though he had 2 walks).  Ray Benge pitched masterfully, shutting down the Phillies over his 8 innings of work.  The Phils did not have their first hit until the 4th inning.

Around the League

• The Giants and Braves keep jockeying for 2nd place.  With today's win for Boston and loss for the Giants, the Braves are in 2nd place, 7.5 games back of Pittsburgh.  New York is in 3rd place and 8 games back.
• The Cincinnati Reds have lost 8 games in a row.  They've been outscored 13-53 over that stretch.  Cincinnati was league-worst in the month of July, finishing 9-19.
• Arky Vaughan continues to lead the batting race.  He is still hitting over .400 at .403.  He is also tied for 1st in the league in walks, which means his on-base percentage is high at .477.
• Hal Schumacher of the Giants leads the league in wins with 15.  He has been consistent all season ERA-wise and will likely finish strong.  Van Mungo is tied for 3rd with 13.
• Mel Ott is the first player to hit 100 RBI's.  He has exactly 100 and is also leading the league with 28 home runs.
• Len Koenecke is 4th in the league in 'Runs Creater per 27 outs' at 9.0.  Only Arky Vaughan, Mel Ott, and Paul Waner are ahead of him.
