Dodgers edge Phils to secure series split

A packed house at Ebbets Field saw their Dodgers win a close one today, beating the Phillies 4 to 3.  Ray Benge got the win, bouncing back from a poor performance is his previous start; he went 8.1 innings, allowed 11 hits, 3 earned runs, while walking 5 and striking out 4.  The Dodgers pounded out 11 hits to match the Phillies, but Brooklyn had more timely hitting.

The Dodgers got off to a good start by scoring 1 in the 1st inning.  Three singles, capped by Sam Leslie's base hit scored the run.  The Dodgers would score again in the 3rd inning.  Lonny Frey led off with a single, then Danny Taylor walked.  Sam Leslie grounded out, but Hack Wilson hit an RBI single.

The Phillies would make it a 2-1 game in the 4th.  Dolph Camilli slammed a home run.  But the Dodgers would score a pivotal 2 runs in the 5th.  Buzz Boyle led off the inning with a home run.  After an out was recorded, Danny Taylor singled, then Sam Leslie singled.  Hack Wilson hit another RBI single.

The Phillies would score 2 in the 7th inning but it was too late.  Dick Bartell doubled.  After an out was recorded, Ethan Allen slammed a 2-run home run.
