6 Unearned runs dooms Dodgers, snaps winning streak

The Dodgers saw their winning streak snapped today in front of 26,387 fans at Crosley Field.  The Dodgers were doomed by a pair of big errors.  Without those errors, the Dodgers would have likely won the game as they out-hit the Reds 15-9.  But no, errors by Lonny Frey and Tony Cuccinello led to 6 unearned runs.

The Reds scored 4 runs (all unearned) in the 1st inning.  Lead-off hitter Gordon Slade reached on an error by Tony Cuccinello.  After a ground out and a fly out, Jim Bottomley singled, scoring Slade.  Chick Hafey was up next singled.  Harlin Pool then hit a big 3 run home run.

The Reds scored 2 unearned runs in the next inning.  Gordon Slade led off with a single.  Sparky Adams then doubled, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd, no outs.  Mark Koenig batting next and hit a grounder to Lonny Frey who muffed the ball, one run scored.  Next, Jim Bottomley grounded into a double play but a run scored.

The Dodgers, as we mentioned pounded out 15 hits.  An injustice happened in 8th when Buzz Boyle hit into a bizarre double play wherein the bases were loaded with 1 out but Tony Cuccinello was ruled out on appeal.
