Dodgers and Giants play a barn burner

Well it was another barn burner of a game today at The Polo Grounds, but it was the Dodgers that won the game (4-0) and the series.  Van Mungo pitched another gem; he threw a complete game shutout, allowing just 4 hits against a very tough Giants offense.  Roy Parmelee matched him for the first 5 innings.  The Dodgers finally broke through with 2 runs in the 6th.  Joe Stripp reached on an error and then Hack Wilson hit one out of the park.  That home run broke the tie and gave the Dodgers the momentum.  The Giants only had 4 at-bats with runners in scoring position and they did not get a hit in any.  Van Mungo was simply too much to handle.  Mel Ott was even 0-for-4 in this one.

Special mention for Lonny Frey who finished 3-for-5 with 2 RBI's.

Field conditions were wet for this game and may have contributed a bit to the lack of offense.  Either way, this game was intense and you could feel the rivalry building between these two teams.  We look forward to many games at the Polo Grounds over the coming years.  But, as for now, we are glad to take this opening series.

"It was a fine game, a hell of a battle," Manager Mathew Williams said.  "Van Mungo was sensational.  This team has tremendous fight.  We are now tied for 2nd place with the Giants and Cardinals.
