Mungo strikes out 10 in win over Phillies

It hasn't been a great season for Van Mungo, but he looked every bit the ace he was last year in this one, striking out 10 Phillies hitters in a complete game win.  Mungo's fastball was poppin' as he retired 10 batters in a row at one point.  The Phillies had only 1 extra base hit among their 6 hits total.  Syl Johnson picks up the loss for the Phils.  He went just 2.2 innings, surrendering 6 runs (5 earned).

The Dodgers scored 6 runs in the 3rd inning.  Mungo, Boyle, and Bucher all reached with singles after 1 was out.  Then, 2 bases loaded walks led to 2 runs.  After a ground out scored another, Tony Cuccinello singled + an error from the left field, scoring 2 more runs.   A wild pitch would lead to the final run of the inning.

Len Koenecke blasted a 2-run home run in the 5th inning to put the Dodgers up 8-0.  The Phillies would add 3 in the 6th inning after 5 bases reached consecutively.  But it wasn't enough for the Phillies as they end up losing this one.

Around the League:
  • Last night's game at The Polo Grounds set a season record for most runs scored by both teams combined.  The Cubs defeated the Giants in a game that featured 33 combined runs.  The 39 combined hits are another season record.  The Giants scored 8 runs in the very 1st inning only to lose the game, 18-15.  Eight home runs were hit in the game.
  • Arky Vaughan is hitting .462 on the season.  Can he hit .400?  Bill Terry hit .400 in 1930.  We will see if Vaughan can get it done.
  • Three batters hold a 1.000+ OPS this season: Vaughan, Medwick, Ott, and Hack.
  • The Boston Braves have lost 10 games in a row.  They had overachieved in the early on, and now they're 11 games below .500 at 17-28.
