Dodgers return home from Vero Beach, prepare for Opening Day

The Dodgers' Spring Training campaign has wrapped up, and now it's all systems go for the regular season beginning in one week.

The annual pilgrimage to Vero Beach was a successful one in 1934, with players getting into season-ready shape under the Florida sun.  The palms swayed gently in the breeze as Dodger players practiced every facet of the game - from the routine (batting and fielding practice, bullpens) to more obscure (pitchers' fielding practice, situational strategy, other things).  The goal is to be in season-ready shape before next week.  Manager Williams thinks they look good.

"Every player showed up this year intent on training hard," Manager Williams said.  "I can honestly say we ran one hell of a camp.  No one can question this team's heart."

Indeed it seems that the relationships on this team have grown strong, anchored in no small part by Manager Williams, who is working hard to build team chemistry.  Williams ran a rather demanding camp, forcing players to run laps at the end of each practice.  It was the kind of 'tough love' often associated with Williams managing style.  But make no mistake, he also made it clear that he also wants every player to have fun and enjoy the ride.  "I want us to play like we love the game - which we do."

Williams, for his part, enjoyed Spring Training in the temperate Florida conditions.  Off the field he played some golf at Florida courses and spent some nights at bars sipping rum and cokes and thinking about the season ahead.  There was also some time spent at beach.  Mostly though, Williams was all about business, laser-focused on making this season as successful as possible.  Williams loves competition, and the seriousness he demands of his team endears him to some while pushing others away.  Williams needs to strike the right balance with his players.

The team will now travel back to Brooklyn via a long train ride.  We will bring you more coverage tomorrow!
