What began as a tremendous pitcher's duel between Braves' starter Huck Betts and Dodgers' hurler Ray Benge ended with a hard luck loss for the Dodgers, with Sam Leslie committing a crucial error in the 8th. The score was 0-0 heading into the bottom of the 8th. Catcher Shanty Hogan reached base to start the inning on an error by third baseman Jimmy Jordan. After a flyout, pitcher Huck Betts bunted a ball down the first base line; Sam Leslie fielded it and then threw it away - a crucial, two-base error. Betts scampered over to 2nd, Shanty Hogan was at third. Next Billy Urbanski singled against a drawn-in infield, plating both runs. The Dodgers went quietly in the top of the 9th.
This game was probably the most exciting one we've seen so far this season, as Betts and Benge matched each other inning-for-inning deep into the game. Betts ended up with the shutout win, going 9 innings, allowing 5 hits, 0 earned runs, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts. Benge was tagged with the loss, he went 8 innings, allowed 3 hits, 2 runs (0 earned runs), 2 walks, 1 strikeout. It was the big errors in the 8th, especially Leslie's, that gave the game to the Braves. With the win, the Braves reinforce their first place position, improving to 6-1. They have won 6 games straight.
